Ahh... the Galoot
page...
So, what in the world is a "Galoot," you ask? I'm glad you did. Because I are one.
Galoots are individuals that share three things in common:
-
The joy of working wood using antique or human-powered tools.
-
Members of an on-line community that celebrates the "unplugged" woodshop.
-
Anyone who fits the above two categories and wishes to be identified as (or with) such.
Hi. My name is Mack, and I'm a Galoot.
My favorite way to work wood is using hand tools. Prior to the time that the Industrial Revolution ducked its head to clear the door of the woodworker's cottage/shop, all woodworking was, of course, human powered. I have nothing against the Industrial Revolution per se, although I've been accused of being a closet Luddite. I do enjoy, however, the solace of the quiet shop, disturbed only by the rhythm of the saw, the banging of mallet on chisel, or the gentle swish of the hand plane. I have to admit that early power tools are interesting to me as well, particularly those that are line shaft driven. Here is a (very) little information on those. (Line shaft information)
This page and the pages linked to it are about hand tool woodworking, and my goal is that over time it will be a very active repository for Neanderthal woodworking.
